Robert Holguin

Robert Holguin is a filmmaker, journalist and storyteller who hails from the borderlands of southern New Mexico and West Texas. His work as an independent filmmaker is rooted in character, place, music, subculture and the strange poetry of life on the margins. Holguin has written, directed and produced an array of award-winning short films, music videos and three feature-length independent films.

His latest feature-length documentary, Blood, Sweat, and Beers, chronicles the making of a comedy rock album at Tornillo’s Sonic Ranch studios by three sketch comedians and musical mastermind Money Mark. It offers a funny, intimate look at friendship, creative obsession, and the strange alchemy of turning comedic bits into actual songs.

Alongside his filmmaking, Holguin has built a distinguished, Murrow and Emmy award-winning career in broadcast journalism. His reporting has taken him everywhere from the grunge clubs of 1990s Seattle to the cartels of Ciudad Juárez, dropping him into the center of national tragedies, Capitol Hill politics, celebrity trials and major cultural moments.

A native of Vado, New Mexico, and a graduate of New Mexico State University, he is currently based in El Paso, Texas.

Robert Holguin will introduce his film Blood, Sweat, and Beers at 11 pm Saturday, July 18 in the Philanthropy Theatre and The Day After Tomorrow at 7:30 pm Tuesday, July 21 in the Philanthropy Theatre.
