Based on the popular novel by William Goldman (1931-2018), The Princess Bride didn’t fare all that well at the box office when it came out in 1987, but it has earned a loyal audience over the past three decades, mainly due to home video. It toggles between present day — as wise grandfather (Peter Falk) reads a book to his video-game loving grandson (Fred Savage) — and medieval times. This charming fairy-tale adventure follows stubborn would-be princess Buttercup (Robin Wright); her sleazy suitor, Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon); and her true love, farm boy-turned-pirate Westley (Cary Elwes). Buttercup and Westley encounter numerous obstacles, enemies, allies and cameos (by Billy Crystal and Carole Kane) in their quest to be reunited.
