Cornelius Ryan’s moving account of D-Day, told by one of the largest all-star casts ever assembled, is one of the truly great war films. Shot on original locations in France, cast with actors to speak in their native German and French, and using authentic WWII weaponry and uniforms, the film achieves as much realism as an epic documentary. Spanning from General Eisenhower’s plans for the Allied forces’ entrance to covering five different points of invasion, the Normandy landings have perhaps never been more thoroughly explored in the history of film. This Best Picture Oscar nominee was the second highest-grossing film of its year and saved 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy. — Jack Fields
