Based on a true story, this epic war film and prison drama tells of the mass escape of a large group of British Commonwealth soldiers from the Stalag Luft III war camp during World War II. Though the end result is great entertainment and a classic, the filmmakers took several liberties in their adaptation of the original non-fiction book by Paul Brickhill by adding American soldiers to the story. This allowed the film to be cast with some of Hollywood’s hottest action stars of the time, including Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Charles Bronson. McQueen’s iconic daredevil motorcycle jump was performed by stuntman Bud Ekins. — Jack Fields
