The legendary Charles Chaplin’s most political film finally comes to Plaza Classic, having first shown at the Plaza Theatre in March 1942. Chaplin plays the dual roles of a Jewish barber and soldier who lost his memory in World War I, and as Adenoid Hynkel, the fascist dictator of Tomainia, who attacks Jews with stormtroopers. When Hynkel is arrested by his own soldiers who mistake him for the barber, the barber steps in and pretends to be Hynkel. This was Chaplin’s genius way of both mocking and accusing the rise of Hitler in Germany. His character’s famous speech at the end of the film is both chilling and inspiring, and still as relevant as ever. — Jack Fields
