A rare animated hit film that explores Mexican culture is also a story as old as time – two friends and rivals, Manolo (Diego Luna), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum), compete for the love of a woman, Maria (Zoe Saldaña). However, their rivalry is colored by a bet between the rulers of two underworld lands — The Land of the Remembered and The Land of the Forgotten. Set against the backdrop of Día de los Muertos, Manolo, Joaquin, and Maria are inseparable as children, but youthful hijinks cause Maria’s father to send her to finishing school to become a proper young lady. As time passes, both Manolo and Joaquin grow into what is intended as their destiny – a bull fighter for Manolo and a soldier for Joaquin. But they discover that they can write their own ending in the Book of Life. Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro produced. — Erin Ritter
