Adapted from the French film, La Cage Aux Folles (1978), The Birdcage takes us to a South Beach drag club where we meet Armand (Williams), the owner of the club, and Albert (Lane), the drag queen known as Starina. Since Armand’s son wants to marry the daughter of an ultra- conservative senator (Hackman), Armand and Albert reluctantly agree to play it straight for one dinner with the prospective in-laws. What could possibly go wrong? Director Nichols assembled a stellar cast which was awarded Best Ensemble at the 1996 SAG Awards. This charming, eccentric comedy is ultimately a celebration of families who love and support each other no matter their differences. As the movie tagline states, “Everyone should be able to embrace their most authentic selves without moral judgement.” The Birdcage will be there as an unforgettable classic to be watched whenever we need to be reminded. — Leanne von Mittenwald
