Join award-winning El Paso filmmaker Valeria Contreras for a special event and Q&A exploring filmmaking as a community practice., connection, and reflections on home. Oranges is a proof-of-concept short film based on the feature screenplay, developed through the El Paso Community Foundation’s Border Art Residency and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers Director Incubator Sponsored by Netflix. The feature screenplay in development chronicles the disparate lives of two sisters who grew up on the border. In this 14-minute short, set in the early ‘70s, the older, responsible Griselda tries to hold it together as her free-spirited younger sister Lucia prepares to leave for Mexico City. Oranges follows Contreras’ 2022 short Homesick about lovers separated by the U.S.-Mexico border during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. It screened at various festivals. — Doug Pullen
