DeVito (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Batman Returns, Twins) directs and stars in this alongside his real-life wife, Perlman. He taps into the macabre vision of the Roald Dahl novel upon which this is based. DeVito and Perlman play the hilariously neglectful parents of Matilda, a remarkably intelligent young girl whose brilliance goes unrecognized at home. Upon enrolling at the oppressive Crunchem Hall Elementary, Matilda discovers she has telekinetic abilities. With support from her kind-hearted teacher Miss Honey (Davidtz), she gains the strength to stand up to the tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, and begin forging a better future. Mara Wilson, who plays Matilda, was just 8 during filming and had also appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire and the remake of Miracle on 34th Street. Though not a blockbuster upon release, Matilda has since achieved cult classic status and inspires a successful Broadway adaptation in 2013. — Jaime Mendez
