Like the best science fiction films, Idiocracy is a dark comedy that explores a fictional reality while inviting us to reflect on our own contemporary culture. Joe Bauers (Wilson) is absolutely normal, but after being put into a deep sleep for 500 years through a government experiment gone awry, he and Rita (Maya Rudolph) awaken in a future where ex-wrestler Dwayne Camacho (Terry Crews) is president and Bauers is intellectually exceptional compared to the rest of the population. Directed by Mike Judge, a New Mexico native known for the animated series King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-head, and another cult satirical film Office Space (1999), Idiocracy is full of one-liners and memorable moments that have increased in relevance since its release almost 20 years ago. — Lisa Elliott
