Seven Oscars, including Best Picture, went to this feel-good family film that still lifts the spirits. St. Dominic’s Church is having financial difficulties and its elderly pastor Father Fitzgibbon (Best Supporting Actor winner Barry Fitzgerald) doesn’t have a lot of creative plans for how to save it. Enter young Father Chuck O’Malley (Best Actor winner Bing Crosby), who, before becoming a priest, was much more interested in playing golf and womanizing the ladies. At first, Father O’Malley’s progressive methods don’t go over well with the Parish, but as soon as he connects with the church the cold tone changes. This uplifting, faith-based film, which played the Plaza Theatre in July 1944, was the No. 1 movie of that year, and was one of the most frequently shown to American soldiers overseas to boost morale. — Jack Fields
