At the height of World War II, when a large swath of young American men were sent overseas to fight tyranny, women were recruited to fill their roles, including in professional baseball. Sisters Dottie (Davis) and Kit (Petty) each have a chance to play in the Women’s Baseball Association, causing their simmering rivalry to boil over. The sisters, along with their teammates, must overcome both their washed up, drunk manager (Hanks) and the overt sexism from the stands. But they learn quickly that “there’s no crying in baseball.” This fictionalized account of the real All-American Girls Professional Baseball League features cameos by some of the real players. Madonna and David Strathairn also star. — Stephanie Valle
