Late director Peter Bogdanovich achieved his biggest box-office success with this hilarious throwback to the screwball comedies of the 1930s. Superstars Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal play Judy and Howard, a free-spirited young woman and a nerdy musicologist who cross paths at an academic convention in a San Francisco hotel. Sparks fly between the two, despite Howard’s neurotic fiancee (a scene-stealing Madeline Kahn in her film debut). Add to all of this a mixup of four identical suitcases, including one with stolen jewels and another with government documents, and you have an irresistible laugh fest ranked by many as one of the great romantic comedies. — Jack Fields
