El Paso native Don Bluth, who appeared at PCFF 2017, walked out on his chief animator position at Disney to bring this dark and complex animated film to the big screen in his directorial debut. Based on a similarly named children’s book, The Secret of NIMH profiles a widowed field mouse named Mrs. Brisby whose son falls ill as she tries to move her family out of a field before plowing season. She seeks help from The Great Owl, and ultimately from a mysterious group of rats also living on the farm. Mrs. Brisby soon learns more about the rats and their connection to her late husband. This adventurous tale of courage and inner strength is Bluth’s greatest personal achievement and paved the way for bigger post-Disney successes such as The Land Before Time, An American Tail, and Anastasia. — Stephanie Valle
