This coming-of-age film centers on a group of neighborhood boys and their passion for baseball. Set in the 1960s, the story opens with Scotty Smalls (Guiry) who’s the new kid on the block. He soon discovers the sandlot and his peers who’ve made it their second home. Awkward and naïve, Smalls is taken under the wing of the sandlot’s leader, Benny (Vitar), and becomes one of the gang. His acceptance is challenged, though, when he loses his stepfather’s prized possession to the neighborhood fiend known as The Beast and the boys must bravely retrieve it. Often quoted, The Sandlot schools its viewers in the many titles of Babe Ruth, deconstructs the anatomy of a s’more, and takes us back to simpler times when kids could play unsupervised sports all day long. — Kristin Trick
