From the time she was a child, Deloris Wilson (Goldberg) wanted to perform. She relished making people smile and laugh by giving them a good show, even if it meant getting into trouble with the teachers at her parochial school. Now an adult, Deloris makes her living as a lounge singer at the casino owned by her married gangster boyfriend (Keitel). When Deloris witnesses a murder at her lover’s hand and must enter the witness protection program, she is hidden at St. Katherine’s convent, where she meets Mother Superior (Smith) and is assigned to take charge of a tone-deaf but jubilant choir. This film combines gentle humor, inspirational music and some dramatic elements. It was one of the 10 highest grossing films of 1992, leading to a sequel, and was included on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years … 100 Laughs list. — Kristin Trick
