Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) dreamed of stardom since he was just a young koala bear. He learned early that fame meant popularity, riches, and easy living … so he chased these dreams onto the stage. The problem is that Buster’s talents are more suited to directing than performing. When he decides to host a talent show to save a theater, he gets far more than expected as novice performers make their debuts. There’s the overworked, overtired stay-at-home mom (Witherspoon); the jaded, insecure punk-rocker (Johansson); and the superficial tough-guy (Egerton), whose talents Buster must guide and protect. The film is packed with well-known songs, including at least 85 hit tracks from the 1940s to 2016, and is stocked with the vocal talents of Oscar-connected celebrities like Jennifer Hudson, John C. Reilly, and Seth MacFarlane. It is also the first film by Illumination Entertainment to not include any human characters. — Kristin Trick
