Get ready to laugh your you-know-what off. Director Paul Verhoeven’s social satire about the travails of showgirl life in Las Vegas was so bad it became a cult hit on the midnight circuit and on home video, where it’s much safer to watch without being judged. In 1999, Seattle journalist and author David Schmader, an El Paso native, began showing it at clubs, events and film festivals, offering his pithy commentary throughout. The film’s distributors were so impressed, they asked him to record his annotated version for a DVD reissue of the MGM/UA bomb. Schmader’s back home in El Paso, where he’ll perform his live commentary to an NC-17 version of Verhoeven’s 1995 anti-classic. To be fair, we’re showing Verhoeven’s futuristic —and much better — RoboCop at 10:30 pm Saturday, July 27 in the Plaza Theatre. — Doug Pullen
