In 1850, Adam Ponitipee (Howard Keel) visits Oregon Territory to pick up supplies including a wife. He convinces Milly (Jane Powell) to marry. Once they arrive at his cabin, she quickly discovers that she was misled and will be taking care of him and his six mannerless brothers. As Milly and Adam’s affections grow other, she teaches them manners as well as how to court women. At a barn raising (one of the film’s most dazzling sequences), the brothers fall for six young women whose suitors are not pleased with the competition. Returning to the cabin, Adam hatches a plan to kidnap the women and bring them home. It’s one of the last great MGM musicals, with inventive choreography and a premise that doesn’t match today’s sensitivities. — Erin Ritter
