Another of the great movie Westerns from legendary director John Ford, its title was derived from the theme song, “Oh, My Darling Clementine.” Based largely on a novel, it stars the cerebral Henry Fonda as the legendary Wyatt Earp, who with his brothers Morgan and Virgil (Tim Holt and Ward Bond) have settled in the town of Tombstone, Arizona, set on revenging the murder of their brother James. Though perhaps not the most accurate telling of this true story, Ford claimed to base his film and in particular the famous gunfight on the recollections he heard from the real Wyatt Earp in the 1920s. The film has been cited among the favorite of many directors, including Sam Peckinpah and Hayao Miyazaki, and was chosen for inclusion on the National Film Registry. — Jack Fields
