Decades ahead of Marvel’s world-building, visionary Australian director George Miller returned with co-director George Ogilvie to the post-apocalyptic wasteland with his third film in the Mad Max universe. Mel Gibson’s unhinged but clear-eyed Max returns to the silver screen to continue his wandering search for meaning and humanity in a world that doesn’t seem to have much of either. After his vehicle is stolen by bandits, Max follows them to Bartertown, where he enters the thunderdome to fight for survival. More dangerous than the thunderdome, though, could be Bartertown’s deadly leader Aunty Entity, played memorably by the late Tina Turner. Over-the-top without quite being camp, this film features the breathtaking stunts and detailed production design that are hallmarks of Miller and his team. — Lisa Elliott
