Forty years ago, movie posters previewed the arrival of something “Cute. Clever. Mischievous. Intelligent. Dangerous.” that would leave a lasting impact on pop culture, inspire merchandise, sequels and massive popularity. That movie was Gremlins. When Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), a father and luckless inventor, finds a seemingly adorable creature called a mogwai that he purchases as a pet for his son Billy (Zach Gilligan) for Christmas, he unwittingly causes chaos in the neighborhood. He names the cute, furry creature with big eyes and a gentle demeanor Gizmo and promises to follow three rules: to not expose the mogwai to light; to not get it wet; and to never feed it after midnight. However, as these rules get broken, destructive monsters called Gremlins emerge engaging in sometimes humorous, but more often horrific antics on Christmas Eve. — Keri Moe
