The seventh annual El Paso-based showcase features eight short films, including El Paso filmmaker Valerie Contreras’ sweet Homesick, about a cross-border romance during the pandemic lockdown, Iranian filmmakers Ziba Karamali and Emad Arad’s Barter, about evolving relationships, and Las Cruces filmmaker Ryan Rox’s Shipping Them, about a non-binary dreamer who pines for the life of the girl next door. Shireen Alihaji’s Blue Veil tackles Islamaphobia after 9/11. Seeds, directed by Morningstar Angeline and Ajuawak Kapashesit, is about grieving lost parents. Molly E. Smith’s Lioness is about a mother who fiercely protects her daughter. La Bi-Vencia, a documentary short by Mariana Gongora-Reyes and Analaura Cardenas, is about a border town abandoned after 9/11. Mommyland, an animated short by Aijian Chen, is set in an amusement park where an expectant mother experiences the joys and fears of pregnancy. — Doug Pullen
