“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.” In 1971, Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) released a children’s book, The Lorax, to bring more awareness to deforestation and pollution. The book became an icon for the environmental movement. The 2012 film version expands on the story of The Lorax, the Guardian of the Forest, and Ted, a 12-year-old boy who goes on a quest to search for a Truffula Tree in order to impress Audrey, the girl of his dreams. The forest, destroyed by ambition and greed, is now a barren wasteland. The one remaining Truffula seed will only be released to someone who will restore, renew, and protect the forest. The idea that one person can change things for the betterment of all rings as true today as it did in 1971. — Leanne von Mittenwald
