Area lucha libre fans well know the story of “exotico” Saul “Cassandro” Armendariz, the gay El Paso-born wrestler who became a sensation first in Juarez, then in Mexico, and later the world with his athletic moves, ostentatious costumes, and facial makeup. Roger Ross Williams makes an impressive narrative feature film debut here with this absorbing, feel-good biopic. Of course, he knew his subject well having directed The Man With the Mask, a 2016 documentary about Armendariz. Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Amores Perros, Mozart in the Jungle) literally throws himself into the role, boldly bringing to life Armendariz’s evolution from just another wrestler named El Topo to the charmer who became Cassandro. It features several strong supporting performances. Cassandro had a limited theatrical release in September before heading to Amazon Prime Video. We’re showing this by special arrangement with Amazon Original Movies. — Doug Pullen
