A young girl falls down a rabbit hole and enters a nonsensical world ruled by the Queen of Hearts while encountering strange creatures. Based on Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its 1871 sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, Walt Disney’s 17th animated feature was released in July 1951. Disney first tried to adapt Alice into a feature-length animated film in the ‘30s, starring Mary Pickford as Alice, but scrapped it in favor of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The idea was revived in the 1940s. It originally was intended to be a live-action/animated film, but Disney decided it would be fully animated. It would be another decade before it reached the screen. Memorable voice characterizations include Katherine Beaumont as Alice, Ed Wynn (Mad Hatter), Richard Haydn (Caterpillar), Sterling Holloway (Cheshire Cat), and Jerry Colonna (March Hare).
