White is the second of the great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colors trilogy, which explores the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. It’s also the lightest, a comedy-drama about Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski), whose life spins ever downward after his wife (Julie Delpy) dumps him. Karol sinks so low that he resorts to busking for money with only a comb and a piece of paper. That’s how he befriends the sympathetic Mikolaj (Janusz Gajos), a man who seems to have everything. Mikolaj offers him an unsavory job and transport back to Poland, albeit packed into a suitcase. The ever-resourceful Karol is up to the task in this surprising and bittersweet comedy highlighted by the late director’s deft touch and Zamachowski’s empathetic performance. — Doug Pullen
