Based on the 1897 novel by H.G. Wells, Claude Rains creates a towering presence and “radio performance” in his film debut as the scientist slowly driven mad after discovering an invisibility serum in this horror classic directed by James Whale (Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein). The classic themes of misguided science and unbridled ambition have seldom been fused together more effectively, and the screenplay contains some of the most biting, literate dialog in any fantasy film.
