Australian director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, Elvis) often explores people pushing back against cultural expectations and the roles that are set for them. This idea, as well as his keen eye for production design, emphasis on music, and memorable characters can all be seen in this, his debut film. Fran (Tara Morice) loves to dance but isn’t given much attention at the dance studio because she doesn’t fit the stereotypical dancer mold. Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio), the son of a famous dance couple, partners with her in secret as a rejection of his mother’s expectations and to develop his own style of dance that isn’t “strictly ballroom.” When they dance alone, it’s magic. But what will happen when they have an audience? — Lisa Elliott
