Based on J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, Peter Pan was Walt Disney’s 14th animated feature. The plot follows Wendy Darling and her two brothers, who are visited by Peter Pan and travel with him to the island of Neverland to stay young. There they face Peter’s arch enemy, Captain Hook. Filled with memorable songs by Sammy Cahn and Sammy Fain and classic scenes, the movie has been criticized for its stereotypical depiction of Native Americans. Peter Pan features fine voice work by Bobby Driscoll (as Peter), Kathryn Beaumont (Wendy), and Hans Conried (Captain Hook). It was the final Disney animated feature released through RKO before Disney founded his own distribution company (Buena Vista) and marked the last film in which all members of “Disney’s Nine Old Men” worked together as directing animators. — Jay Duncan
