Burt Reynolds (Smokey and The Bandit, The Longest Yard) plays Sonny Hooper, the greatest movie stuntman in the world whose long-held honorary title is challenged by newcomer Delmore “Ski” Shidski (Jan-Michael Vincent). Ski is willing to do very dangerous stunts with minimal care or knowledge of possible repercussions. When a doctor warns Hooper about becoming a paraplegic after a major fall, he considers retirement. But a large $100,000 payout for death-defying stunt in a new movie leads him to team with Ski — even after his girlfriend Gwen (Sally Field) threatens to leave him. Stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham (Smokey and The Bandit, Cannonball Run) pays homage to the stuntmen and women of the film industry in this Top 10 box-office hit, one of his eight films with Reynolds.
