After the 1950 comedy Father of the Bride became a fast hit, MGM immediately began developing this equally entertaining sequel from director Vincente Minnelli. Stars Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and Elizabeth Taylor reprise their previous roles as Stanley and Ellie Banks and their daughter Kay. Barely recovered from their daughter’s recent nuptials, the Bankses have opposite reactions to the news that they are going to become grandparents. The lead up to the family’s new addition is a series of comic episodes. This continues last year’s Plaza Classic screening of Father of the Bride on the patio of La Perla Bar, the converted penthouse where Taylor lived briefly in the 1950s. — Jack Fields
