With the rise of digital animation in the 2010s, this hand-drawn animation film from France was a refreshing throwback to more traditional methods. Based on a series of Belgian children’s books, this heartwarming tale is about the unlikely friendship between Celestine, a playful orphaned mouse who crosses paths with Ernest, a grouchy bear and musician. Not only are they different in size and background, but their journey teaches them important life lessons about friendship, kindness, and compassion. This fun and visually charming film screened at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 86th Academy Awards. It was re-dubbed with American voice actors for U.S. release, including Lauren Bacall in her final film role. A sequel, released in France in 2022, debuted this year at the New York International Children’s Festival and hits U.S. theaters later this year. — Jack Fields and Keri Moe
