Before 007 came on the scene, superstar Cantinflas created Agent 777 in The Unknown Policeman, a comedy from the golden age of Mexican cinema, directed by Miguel M. Delgado and shot by Gabriel Figueroa, one of the greatest cinematographers of all time. After solving a bank robbery, a lowly cop (Cantinflas) earns agent status because of his mastery of disguises. The movie marks the first in a long collaboration between Mario Moreno (aka Cantinflas) and Delgado, who would direct the comedian in 33 of the 55 films he made over his stellar career. Each year, the Plaza Classic screens a Cantinflas feature to honor the landmark Colón Theatre, 507 S. El Paso, which once showcased his films. Built in 1919 and given an Art Deco façade in the ’40s, the Colón ended its movie run in 1979, but lives on as a souvenir store. — Laura Emerick
