Director Tim Burton’s next project after Batman (also featured in this year’s festival) focuses on the eponymous character, a breakout role for Johnny Depp and the beginning of a collaboration with Burton that has lasted for decades. With a black leather jumpsuit, untamed shock of black hair, and most importantly, scissors for hands, Edward stands in contrast to the uniform pastel palette of the rest of the suburban town. At first, Edward is celebrated for his difference and the talents he has for design – of both shrubs and housewives’ hair. But as he and Kim Boggs, played by Winona Ryder, begin to fall in love, a moral panic takes hold in the community, and it threatens to destroy them all. — Lisa Elliott
