Loosely based on the children’s book series by Hugh Lofting, and not the 1967 musical, this comedy stars Eddie Murphy as John Doolittle, who as a child had the unique ability to communicate with animals. Since no one else can, John is branded as sick and evil. Vilified by his family and friends, young John stops talking to animals, eventually forgetting he has this gift – until 30 years later. Dr. John Doolittle accidentally rediscovers his unique talent, causing John to think he has gone crazy. He eventually realizes the ability is a gift and becomes a veterinarian to save animals’ lives. It was a huge success, though critics were mixed, and features an all-star voice cast for the animals, including Norm McDonald, Chris Rock and Albert Brooks.
