Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt won Oscars for their hilarious and moving performances in this irresistible romance from the master of comedy/drama, writer-director James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News). Nicholson is Melvin Udall, a successful novelist and absolutely dreadful human being who offends everyone with his obsessive-compulsive disorder and cantankerous personality. Hunt is Carol Connelly, a waitress and single mother who may be the only person who can keep Melvin in line. When Melvin’s sensitive artist neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear) is hospitalized, Melvin begrudgingly becomes the caretaker of Simon’s dog. The pet, the waitress, and the artist may all just be the friends that Melvin never knew he needed. El Paso’s Lupe Ontiveros had a small role in the film.
