Legendary director Frank Capra won his third Academy Award in five years for this charming Columbia Pictures comedy, written by frequent collaborator Robert Riskin (whose daughter, Victoria Riskin, will help introduce it). In his first of three Capra collaborations, Jimmy Stewart plays Tony, a young executive for a powerful bank owned by his father (Edward Arnold). Tony is in love with his beautiful secretary Alice (Jean Arthur), but she fears he will not blend well with her eccentric family. Matters get worse when Tony’s father plans to foreclose on Alice’s family home. Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by George Kaufmann and Moss Hart, this sleeper hit eventually became the biggest moneymaker of its year and won the Best Picture Oscar.
