One of several movies in this year’s Plaza Classic that influenced Damien Chazelle’s inspired 2016 movie musical La La Land (which closes this year’s PCFF), this is the second of French director Jacques Demy’s sterling collaborations with composer Michel Legrand (who died Jan. 26). Its equally colorful predecessor, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, was more a reinvention of the movie musical. Young Girls is a Hollywood musical homage, down to an appearance by Gene Kelly, king of the MGM musicals. It takes place over a weekend in the French coastal town of Rochefort, where a fair is rolling in. Sisters Delphine and Solange (real sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorléac, who died three months after its release) long for love. So does everyone else for that matter in this warm, fun, inventive musical. Its opening scene, sense of place and color palette all informed La La Land.
