The late, great (and 2010 Plaza Classic Film Festival guest) Debbie Reynolds received her only Academy Award nomination for her unforgettable portrayal of the real-life woman who went from rags to riches. Based on the hit stage musical by Meredith Wilson (The Music Man), the film chronicles Molly Brown’s story from her impoverished youth to her marriage to a gold miner and survival aboard the Titanic, all told with humor and song. Reynolds lobbied hard for the lead role as director Charles Walters originally wanted Shirley MacLaine (who later played a character based on Reynolds in Postcards From the Edge). Reynolds won the role, and the best reviews of her long career. Reynolds often called this the favorite of all her films and did several national tours of the musical.
