The thing

The 1951 Howard Hawks’ classic The Thing From Another World, adapted from John W. Campbell’s 68-page gem Who Goes There? (written under the nom de plume Don A. Stuart), was hugely successful in creating unbearable suspense, definitive and well-rounded characters, and the claustrophobic atmosphere of a military outpost in the Arctic threatened by a highly intelligent alien life-force. Yet, its being was radically different. Hawks’ film is considered an undisputed classic of the genre, but the author was dissatisfied with it. The Thing director John Carpenter and screenwriter Bill Lancaster (Burt’s son), with input from star Kurt Russell, returned to the source material to depict the ever-changing extraterrestrial, brought to life in state-of-the-art and heretofore unseen graphic detail, without the aid of computers, by 22-year-old special makeup effects wiz Rob Bottin. Campbell died in 1971. One has to wonder what he would have thought of this filming of HIS story.
