The Plaza Classic Film Festival would not be complete without our 12th annual(!!!) showing of the ultimate cult classic. Richard O’Brien’s stage musical comes to fabulous life with Tim Curry reprising his stage role as the mad but “sweet transvestite from Transylvania,” Dr. Frank-N-Furter. When a newly engaged couple (Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick) gets stranded at Dr. Frank’s castle, he sets out to convert them into Transylvanians. The film holds the record for longest theatrical run, never having been out of some form of limited release since its premiere in 1975. It’s also chock full of great ’50s-rooted rock ‘n’ roll, including “The Time Warp.” Let’s do the Time Warp again — inside of our cars!
Rocky Horror will show first on a double bill with one of its spawn, John Cameron Mithcell’s glam rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch. El Paso-born Mitchell won Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival for this unconventional rock musical comedy-drama based on the Obie-winning off-Broadway production he wrote with Steven Trask. A huge hit on Broadway, this 2001 film adaptation stars Mitchell as a transgender singer from then-Communist East Germany who pursues the rock ‘n’ roll dream, mostly at dive bars and seafood restaurants, while shadowing the former bandmate who stole his songs. With solid performances and well-constructed songs, it often has been described as the natural successor to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
