After his massive success as the bumbling deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show, Don Knotts parlayed his TV popularity and five supporting-actor Emmy wins into starring status in a mid-’60s series of Hollywood comedies. Here he plays Roy Fleming, a bumbling amusement-park ride operator, afraid of heights and life in general. His autocratic father (Arthur O’Connell) decides that Roy has the right stuff to contribute to the space race and gets him a job at NASA, for what turns out to be a janitorial post. To compete with the Soviets at the height of the Cold War, NASA officials are eager to send an average Joe to infinity and beyond. Who are they gonna call? Mop buster! Though he does his usual bug-eyed shtick, Knotts delights as a milquetoast who finally learns how to chill out and conquer his fears.
