The Piano

Directing Women
Saturday, August 6
Philanthropy Theatre

Jane Campion’s haunting 19th-century love story shares the story of Ada (Hunter), a mute widow who travels with her daughter Flora (Paquin) to New Zealand after being sold into marriage to a man she hasn’t met. While Ada hasn’t spoken since she was a child, her piano has become her voice. However, new husband (Neill) will not allow it in their home. Instead, it is sold to their neighbor George (Keitel) who barters to give it back to Ada key-by-key in exchange for intimate favors. Campion, who won this year’s Best Director Oscar for Power of the Dog, created a powerful, beautiful female narrative that explores oppression, desire, and a world where women’s paths are often decided by men. Visually stunning and impeccably scored, it took home three Oscars — best actress for Hunter, Best Supporting Actress for Paquin and Best Original Screenplay for Campion. — Keri Moe
