In the second of their 10 films together, the dynamic duo of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau mine comedy gold in the film version of the Broadway hit by the late Neil Simon (which also later spawned a hit TV show with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman). After making The Fortune Cookie two years earlier, Lemmon and Matthau are even better here as two divorced pals driving each other crazy. From the late ’60s through the mid-’70s, Lemmon specialized in neurotic New Yorkers (Luv, Prisoner of Second Avenue), and his Felix led the pack. Matthau gets the best lines: “You’re the only man in the world with clenched hair,” he tells Felix. But Lemmon more than holds his own against the delightfully acerbic Matthau. It’s a movie partnership for the ages.
