Part of a wave of ’70s horror films inspired by The Exorcist, The Legacy is most notable for pairing established star Katharine Ross (The Graduate, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) with up-and-comer Sam Elliott (Lifeguard) as the leads. The couple met and fell in love while working on this movie. They play Maggie and Pete, American interior designers summoned to a job in England. They stay at a mansion with five notorious heirs to the home’s mysterious owner, Lord Mountolive (John Standing), who is on life support upstairs. Each heir (including The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Bond/Rocky Horror Picture Show vet Charles Gray) dies an unusual death until only Maggie and Pete remain and her inheritance is revealed. The Legacy was the feature film debut of TV director Richard Marquand (1937-1987), who went on to helm Return of the Jedi.
