Billed by creators Cristina Ibarra, an El Paso native, and husband Alex Rivera as a “docu-thriller,” The Infiltrators blends documentary elements with re-enactments to piece together the story of a group of young Dreamers who were deliberately detained to infiltrate a for-profit immigrant detention center in Florida. It won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and debuted on PBS in 2020. RogerEbert.com critic Matt Fagerholm praised it as “a touching ode to those tireless activists unafraid to fight for their dreams.” One of its subjects, Claudio Rojas, was deported after its release, but was able to return to the U.S. in late 2021. Ibarra and Rivera, who are based in Pasadena, CA, are 2021 McArthur Fellows, the first married couple to receive the so-called “genius” grants in the same year. Bob Moore of El Paso Matters will lead a Q&A after the film.
