This riveting military drama centers on the work of an Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit. Deployed in the Iraq War, newly assigned Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) adds tension to his already edgy team members (Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty). Having disarmed 873 bombs, Staff Sergeant James has repeatedly confronted death and lived to tell the tales. This expertise, along with painful life events, has resulted in a nonchalant and precarious attitude towards bomb-disposal, which puts his team in peril. The “invisible war,’ fought by deployed soldiers, is highlighted as the team members’ mental health and family relationships are followed. The film made history as its director, Kathryn Bigelow, became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director. — Kristin Trick
