After finding fame as the bumbling Barney Fife on the sitcom The Andy Griffith Show, Don Knotts jumped to the big screen, signing a five-film deal with Universal Pictures. His first project, a comedic twist on The Old Dark House theme, gave Knotts another one of his human Gumby roles, this time as Luther Heggs, a timid typesetter with dreams of becoming a reporter. To impress his bosses, he agrees to stay overnight in a haunted mansion. Surviving the ordeal, he writes up a florid account of the experience and becomes an unlikely local hero — except to the property’s heir, who threatens Heggs with a libel suit. Who you gonna call to bust open the truth of this ghost story? It’s up to Mr. Chicken to crack the case.
