This animated fairy tale by Lotte Reiniger is the oldest surviving animated feature film! It features a silhouette animation technique that Reiniger invented, which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera. The technique she used is similar to shadow puppetry, though hers were animated frame by frame, not manipulated in live action. The German director and animator worked on it from 1923 to 1926. Each frame had to be painstakingly filmed, and 24 frames were needed per second. The original prints featured color tinting. The story is based on elements from One Thousand and One Nights, written by Hanna Diyab, including Aladdin and The Story of Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Perī-Bānū. The Plaza Classic’s presentation features a music score by Wolfgang Zeller. A unique visual and audible experience for the entire family. — Jay Duncan
